Free credit freezes are here! You have to go to each credit reporting agency’s site individually and request a freeze. Be sure to write down or save your PIN somewhere when you do your freeze.

By September 21, consumers will be able to "freeze" and "thaw" their credit files at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion temporarily or permanently, without a fee. This "power" comes from the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act that President Trump signed last month. Although Equifax already offers free credit freezes and will continue to offer that service, Experian and TransUnion have not made public announcements about the exact date they will begin offering free credit freezes.
